POKOTABI / Chachatei
茶々亭
Setting itself apart from abura soba and soup ramen, Chachatei headlines banmen. Thick flat noodles catch the savory soy or salt base, accented by seared chashu and lemon, with shrimp wonton soup rounding out the meal.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
When it comes to soupless noodles, abura soba or mazesoba often come to mind, but Chachatei makes banmen its signature draw. The house sauce rests at the bottom of the bowl, meant to be thoroughly tossed through chewy, thick flat noodles. The flavor comes through bold and savory without leaving an oily heaviness on the palate. Topping the bowl is seared chashu pork, tender with a lightly charred crust that adds satisfying heft between bites. Squeezing fresh lemon midway through or reaching for the vinegar and seasonings on the counter sharpens the finish, keeping the bowl lively right down to the end.
Variations on the theme are plentiful, spanning the baseline soy and salt banmen to richer miso banmen, fiery green chili miso banmen, and aromatic dried-sardine niboshi banmen. A reliable sidekick to any dry noodle order is the shrimp wonton soup, offered in full and mini portions. Sipping the hot broth between mouthfuls pulls the meal together and deepens the comfort of the noodles.
Beyond noodles, the menu extends to side dishes like spicy shrimp wontons, thick-cut chashu pork, and a 3-item appetizer plate, paired with bottled beer, highballs, and sours. It is an easygoing spot equally suited to slipping in alone for a quick bowl or lingering over small plates and a drink before calling for noodles.
